The Fan Museum – An oasis of tranquillity

Housed in a pair of Grade II listing buildings, which have been lovingly restored, The Fan Museum is the first and only museum in the world devoted entirely to the ancient art and craft of the fan. It has received awards from the National Art Collections Fund and the British Tourism Authority for its outstanding contribution to the arts and tourism, and also has a research library for those who are interested in learning more. Described as an ‘oasis of tranquillity’; it is home to more than 3,500 fans and fan leaves from all over the world, dating from the 11th century to the present day.

The collection, and the fans on loan, are displayed in changing themed exhibitions throughout the year to present them in their historical and social contexts. From July 24th to December 2nd, the Museum will be host to the ‘Winds of Change’, which will celebrate and display a stunning collection of fans from the Victorian era.

At the rear of the two houses is the intimate Orangery which, with its hand-painted murals and peaceful atmosphere, is an ideal setting for afternoon tea. Served at 3pm on Tuesdays and Sundays, it allows guests to relax and enjoy the view of the elegant Japanese garden. Complete with fan-shaped flowerbeds, a paved parterre, a stream, and subtle Oriental architectural features; visitors describe it as a haven of serenity hidden away in the heart of historic Greenwich.

As a member of the ‘Unique Venues of London’, the Museum provides an elegant and unusual setting for private events, including weddings. Visitors can even have fans commissioned and made to suit their individual requirements and designs. What a way to remember your special day! Fans made on-site and other fan-themed items are available in the gift shop.

The Fan Museum also holds regular fan making workshops on the first Saturday afternoon of each month. Participants will make two traditional Chinese shape fans and learn a great deal about the history and craft of the fan from the expert tutor. Bookings must be made in advance by email or telephone, and all you need to bring with you is two different sheets of paper. (Contact the Museum for further details).

Entry is only £4.00, £3.00 for children aged 7-16, and children under 7 go free. The nearest rail stations are Greenwich and Cutty Sark (Maritime Greenwich). The Museum is five minutes walk from the National Maritime Museum, the Royal Observatory and Greenwich Theatre. Also nearby is the most famous pub in Greenwich, The Trafalgar Tavern – a historic building with a vast terrace, good British food and fantastic views of the river.
