Situated on a pretty street in the heart of Mayfair, the Elemis Day Spa is a sensory paradise that allows stressed-out Londoners to escape the pressures and trivialities of everyday life. As you enter the reception; you are met by the heady smell of incense, the gentle glow of hundreds of candles, and an exotic mix of colours and textures that give the place an almost spiritual atmosphere. The elegant, softly spoken staff call the spa ‘a temple to touch and aroma’, and it is literally impossible to argue with them. This is certainly a far cry from the clinical, all-white spas that are increasingly common and about as relaxing as a dentist’s waiting room.
The treatments available use all of the modern tools and techniques, but are heavily influenced by the therapies and rituals practiced in Bali, Morocco, Japan, Thailand and Tibet. The staff help to tailor the treatments to your specific needs and guide you through the process so you know exactly what to expect. Their anti-ageing facials are especially good; combining potent products and unique micro-circulatory massage techniques to increase elasticity and rejuvenate the skin. They also offer fantastic massage treatments, manicures and pedicures, body exfoliation and moisturising rituals, and treatments specifically designed for men and mothers-to-be.
But it’s the more exotic treatments that really set this spa apart from the rest. The delightfully named Tahitian Bloom treatment consists of a luxurious lime and ginger scrub and a frangipani wrap or float, which leaves your skin smooth, fragrant and refreshed. Equally relaxing is the Hawaiian Four-Hands Massage, where two experts use synchronised massage movements to ease your aching muscles and stimulate your body’s energy flow.
With most treatments costing around £120, it’s not cheap - but for a once-in-a-while treat, or a gift, it’s ideal. They also run a special offer where all treatments booked for 9am (Monday to Friday) receive a complimentary half hour therapy. A luxurious start to any weekday!
For a slightly more masculine approach to grooming, head for Gentleman’s Tonic on Bruton Place. Described as ‘the antidote to the rigours and stresses of the outside world’; this traditional barbershop also offers facials, hand and foot treatments, massage and hair removal. For £30 you can enjoy a traditional wet shave using exclusive products and steaming hot towels. The combination of sleek wood, leather, high-tech music consoles and LCD screens make this a haven for the modern man.
Once you’re suitably relaxed and beautified, why not try one of Lancashire Court’s chic eateries? For aged glamour, cocktails and afternoon tea; Mews of Mayfair is a great choice. The deep leather sofa, plush armchairs and tasty light snacks make it a perfect afternoon retreat. For something a little more modern, try Hush - a bustling brasserie and bar with a European menu, stylish ambience and alfresco dining area. Don’t miss the delicious steamed mussels in a classic white wine sauce!
